THE CITY OF BOSTON
The hub of New England and the capital of Massachusetts, Boston sits at the mouth of the Charles and Mystic rivers. Situated on the banks of Massachusetts Bay, this city is and always has been, very much at the heart of American social, cultural and political life.
As a rather compact city, Boston is best explored on foot. Follow the 2 ½ mile Freedom Trail through historic neighbourhoods, passing sights such as the iconic Massachusetts State House, Granary Burying Ground and the Bunker Hill Monument. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Quincy and Faneuil Hall Markets, two of the most popular places to eat and spend time with friends or make your way to the historic harbour where you’ll find restaurants serving the seafood so fresh you'd think it had come straight out of the sea! Jump onboard a city cruise from here where wildlife lovers will get the opportunity to spot a magnificent variety of whales such as Humpbacks, Minkes and Finbacks – some reaching up to 80 feet in length!
Before you leave, be sure to explore the many wonderful shopping opportunities, from futuristic glass-enclosed galleries to cobbled street markets, keep the kids entertained at the New England Aquarium and Harvard Museum of Natural History and if you’re a sports fan, then you’re in the right place! Head to Fenway Park and watch the famous Boston Red Sox in action.
THE EVER-CHANGING SCENERY OF NEW ENGLAND
The states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut are home to an exciting variety of landscapes and experiences. From the rocky coastline of Maine and the mountain peaks of New Hampshire to the colonial streets of Newport and the steepled churches of Connecticut, there is something here for everyone.
The region boasts some fabulous beaches too from sandy shores to rocky coasts. Head to Cape Cod for its picturesque golden sands and lush dune grasses or try Ocean Beach in New London, Connecticut, it’s calmer waters are perfect for little swimmers plus you’ll find arcades, miniature golf and lots of other family-friendly attractions too.
New England is loved for its waterways, Atlantic Ocean waterfront, the historic Lake Champlain, the mountain-ringed lakes of New Hampshire, fly-fishing on the Housatonic River, and the many picturesque bays. There are ample opportunities to get out on the water independently or as part of an organised excursion. And if you are travelling with the family, there is plenty to keep the children entertained from snowboarding, zip lining and white water rafting to undiscovered granite caves and river rapid rides.
