NATURE, ON AN EPIC SCALE
Adventure junkies are spoilt for choice here. The dramatic coast of Alaska is scattered with glaciers the size of skyscrapers and awe-inspiring attractions such as the Hubbard Glacier, a huge wall of ice, over 5 miles in width. Go glacier trekking, hike across wilderness trails or jump aboard a boat to see Glacier Bay National Park by water – there are so many incredible ways to experience Alaska’s many territories.
The capital, Juneau, is the second-largest city in all the USA in terms of landmass but surprisingly, has a relatively small population. Alongside the cities excellent galleries, restaurants, and nightlife, its limited occupancy means that there is also plenty of natural wonders to explore here too. And if you’re seeking some small-town charm, head to Talkeetna, a pretty town nestled at the base of Denali where you can soak up the phenomenal panoramic views of the Alaska range. And just like the rest of this incredible state, there is adventure in abundance to be found here, from fishing and dog mushing to zip lining and mountain climbing as well as characterful local shops, art galleries and plenty of places to eat and drink the locally brewed beer.
Alaska’s towns offer a fascinating glimpse into their pioneering history and provide the gateway for amazing experiences such as exploring the magnificent Misty Fjord National Monument from Ketchikan, heading out into the wilderness by dog sledge from Juneau or riding the epic Alaska Railroad.
But it’s not just the scenery that stops you in your tracks, the incredible wildlife watching here is just spectacular. Expect to see moose lazily wandering the streets before you’ve even left the city, bald eagles swoop through the skies and if you are lucky, all three species of North American bear can be seen here, the black, grizzly and polar. Offshore whales, orcas and puffins live in the surrounding waters. Time it right, and you might witness the majestic humpback whale feeding in the icy coastal waters.
